Google gets Crowdsourced with Bulletin

Google is spearheading local news with a new app called Bulletin, letting any user post photos, videos, and messages straight to the web from mobile.

Hyperlocal

Without blogs or personal sites, Google is streamlining public stories that can be accessed directly through Google search and social networks, all thanks to Bulletin.

Competing with Twitter and Facebook’s own pushes into more local-based news, Bulletin looks to capitalise on short-form news through crowdsourced articles.

Even against Twitter’s expertise in minimalist content, Google’s reach positions the company in getting articles fastest through its unmatched search capabilities.

Quiet rollout

At the moment, Bulletin is being tested in selected US areas, such as Nashville, Tennessee, Oakland and select parts of California.

What’s most interesting about Google Bulletin’s approach is its dependence on public engagement and contributions. Though just in its infancy, a very different kind of networked news could be on the way.
