Google+ offers custom URLs to brands and celebrities

Google has announced that users and businesses will gradually be given the ability to create a vanity or custom URL for their Google+ profile.

Short and sweet

Google+ profile URLs are currently an ungainly sucession of numbers, as can be seen in Cadbury's current profile URL of https://plus.google.com/117517201037060589294.

The new vanity URLs, however, are short, easy-to-remember web addresses that link directly to a member’s profile or page on Google+, similar to Facebook.com/SMKAPAC and Twitter.com/SMKAPAC.

The new feature will show usernames with ‘+’ signs behind the google.com domain. Toyota has already registered the +Toyota address to change the brand's Google+ URL to google.com/+Toyota.

Size does matter

The new service will soon be available to corporate and individual users around the globe. For now, Google is rolling out custom URLs to a limited set of verified profiles and pages on Google+, starting with prominent personalities and brands.

The company explained on its own profile (which can now be found at google.com/+googleplus), “While we’re not quite ready for everyone to start claiming their own custom URLs, we plan to expand the availability over time.”

There can be only one

The new vanity URLs will make it easier for brands to direct customers to their Google+ page and potentially increasing Google+'s traffic.

The only downside to these URLs is that there can only be one URL per page, and the brand that gets the name will be the first business to claim it, not the business who is most active on the site.

If your brand is on Google+, get in quickly.
