Ever-eager to keep up with the likes of trendier upstarts, Microsoft has taken a tilt at a fun photos app. It’s hardly a Snapchat or Facebook challenger, but it’ll amuse some folks and could even catch on.
Age old algos reframed
Called Sprinkles, Microsoft’s new app brings some familiar MS features to the mobile device app space.
Things like age detection and emotion detection could simplify classification and organisation in some cases.
In truth, Sprinkles reframes these features as Snapchat style novelties rather than practical tools. For person portraits, it’ll even suggest a celebrity lookalike.
Suggested decor
More fun, Sprinkles will suggest captions and stickers to paste onto your snaps.
The app analyses what’s in the photo, and combines it with other data available from your device, including the time, date and location that the image was captured.
Of course, users can override suggested content to apply emoji and text of their own choosing – but where’s the fun in that.
Sprinkles for American Apples
Like some other recent Microsoft releases, Sprinkles is an iOS exclusive, not available on Android or Windows.
Whether they’re treating iPhone fans as a test market or simply prioritising Apple users as a target market, it’s a curious strategy.
Microsoft has launched Sprinkles on the US app store first, with other countries to follow.
