Yahoo, Google, Twitter. Yelp continues the time-honoured trend of digital giants adopting wacky names while delivery a very sophisticated service.

So today we're having a closer look at the location and review-based service.

Yelp all about it

Yelp was founded in 2004 and today has 142 million monthly unique users.

Over 90 million reviews have so far been posted on Yelp.

Even stevens

Yelp users are fairly split in their preferences for checking in.

Mobile users make up around 89 million users, with desktop not far behind on 79 million.

On-the-grow

However mobile users are Yelp's most engaged segment.

Last quarter 71% of Yelp searches came from a mobile device, while mobile users were responsible for 56% of the content shared on the service.

Business broadcaster

There are over 2.1 million businesses listed on Yelp, while the service currently has 90,000 advertisers.

Shopping, Restaurants, and Home and Local Services are the most popular categories with Yelpers.

However only businesses with a three-star Yelp rating or higher can become advertisers.
