Here's an unlikely but potentially powerful alliance: Pinterest and Samsung have just joined forces to take on search.
Pin the Phone on the Digital Donkey
Pinterest's new visual search tech will power the image search function in Samsung's Galaxy S8, and Samsung's AI assistant Bixby.
This means when users take pictures on the phone's camera, they will be shown related products and concepts from Pinterest.
For example, taking a picture of your friend's jacket could unearth accessory ideas, or where to buy the item.
Brands including Target and Home Depot have already tested the associated search ads.
Dollar deals
The move could see Pinterest and Samsung take a chunk out of search marketing budgets – a realm long dominated by Google.
At present Google commands 78% of that market, netting a very nice US$28.5 billion annually.
Currently, only 3% of Pinterest searches mention brands. This could represent a vast untapped market for brands, for now at least.
