The 2018 Q3 Global Digital Statshot from We Are Social and Hootsuite says that around 44% of the world's population is active on social media, with the vast majority of them (40%) being active via mobile device.
Overall ups
There are 11% more social media users now than there were twelve months ago. In real terms, that’s 328 million new social media users, with 316 million of them doing it via mobile.
Google’s terrific traffic
Citing Alexa figures, the report noted that website traffic rankings were topped by Google Search, but it also put three familiar social media giants in the top ten: YouTube (#2), Facebook (#3) and Twitter (#10).
Other high-ranking social-linked sites include qq.com (#7), Instagram (#13), vk.com (#17), Reddit (#18) and Weibo (#20).
In terms of time spent on websites, YouTube (21+ minutes) and vk.com (16+minutes) and OK.ru (13 minutes) were standouts. In the top twenty, only pornography rivalled those time commitments.
Facebook App-tastic
Google properties are killing it in browsers, but Facebook impresses with mobile app saturation: it has four of the top five apps downloaded across all platforms: Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.
Only one-tap game Helix Jump (#4) interrupted Facebook’s dominance at the top of the apps list.
