Step into your favourite videos with Blin.gy

Using innovative mobile green screen technology, Blin.gy puts users into their favourite music videos.

Making sweet music (videos)

If the popularity of musical.ly is anything to go by (130 million users, 12 million videos uploaded daily), young mobile users love making music videos.

A new release from the creators of Chosen (an app which lets users compete with one another to create the most-liked music clips), Blin.gy looks to capitalise on music video trend in yet another way.

Their slogan says it all: “Your favourite videos, featuring you.” Instead of synching user-created video content to pop songs, Blin.gy lets users insert themselves right into their favourite stars’ music videos and share their 15-second cameos with their friends.

Mobile green screen

While it might sound like a gimmicky one-trick pony, Blin.gy relies on some serious technical innovation to bring users’ popstar fantasies to life.

It harnesses the same technique that film producers use to put actors into computer generated scenarios using nothing more than a mobile phone.

Instead of requiring an actual green screen, users can get away with using nothing more technical than a blank wall as a background. Impressively, a phone doesn’t even need to be stabilised while shooting for the effect to work.

Results may vary

Of course, not all Blin.gy videos are created equal. Depending on the processing power of the phone, the background used and how much care is put into shooting the video, final products vary wildly. And that huge variance in quality could prove telling.

Whether or not Blin.gy’s goofy videos will prove popular enough—and shareable enough—to give the app staying power, only time will tell.
