Tumblr bucks trend, goes for longer form content

Tumblr continues to confound expectations this year.

A recent report found Tumblr is now the fastest growing social network. Now Tumblr is bucking the "shorter is better" trend more rolling out tools that support longer form content.

Format this

The update give users a set of tools that resemble the functionality of blog platforms.

Now Tumblr users can spice up their posts by adding an image or a video anywhere in a post, simply by clicking the ⊕ symbol when beginning a new line of text.

Posts have also got a formatting boost with new editing tools replacing the traditional toolbar, allowing users to perform functions including sub-headings and horizontal lines. Text rendering has also been updated.

The tools are now being rolled out, with more features coming soon. Tumblr also updated its iOS and Android apps.

Blogging move?

The update shifts Tumblr from short form into more solid blogging territory – an area dominated by WordPress and Squarespace.

With a reported 420 million users (many in the teen/young adult demographic) and the wind behind its sails, Yahoo-owned Tumblr looks poised for a very promising 2015.
