While Twitter Music was about as popular as an Engelbert Humperdink Christmas Special, Twitter hasn't given up on music, or audio at least.
Audio Cards
Twitter has just announced Audio Cards, which allows users to listen to music, podcasts and other audio feeds from their timeline.
“With a single tap, the Twitter Audio Card lets you discover and listen to audio directly in your timeline on both iOS and Android devices,” Twitter's Richard Slatter explained in a blog post.
Tweets or trills
While Twitter has long allowed users to embed music content, Audio Cards let users continue to listen while browsing through Twitter.
Users simply click on the audio content in their timeline, and continue tweeting as usual.
Musical chairs
Twitter is partnering with SoundCloud for Audio Cards, while new music on iTunes will soon be available and offer richer content.
For example, songs gleaned from SoundCloud will feature album artwork, notes and links to related music.
New tracks from iTunes will play in their entirety on Audio Cards, while on iTunes just the first 120 seconds of these tracks will be available.
It's too early to tell if Audio Cards will fare better than the ill-fated Twitter Music experiment, but no-one can accuse Twitter of standing idle.
