In the tradition of Twitter celebrity status symbols, WhatsApp is verifying business accounts.
Looking verified
When a WhatsApp business account has been verified, a green tick will appear next to its account name. It looks much as you’d expect…
As well as the tick in a green star by the account name, verification will also be communicated via yellow messages in chat.
What it means to be verified?
WhatsApp’s version of account verification simply means that it has confirmed that the phone number really does belong to the business in question.
It is not clear exactly how rigorous their checking processes are. In case it is misused, even verified accounts can be blocked.
For FAQ’s sake
An update to the WhatsApp FAQ explains that ‘WhatsApp is exploring ways for you to communicate with the businesses that matter to you.’
They explain that verified business names will display if the number isn’t saved in a user’s address book. If the number is saved in the users address book, the name they gave to it will supersede the verified one.
When can I?
WhatsApp is currently putting verified business accounts through their paces. Broader release is expected after the pilot program is complete.
How important are verified social media accounts? When communicating via social media, does account verification add to sense of confidence?
