WhatsApp Status and Snapchat stories are passing big milestones on their respective apps.
Tell me a story
WhatsApp’s success has been a result of its multifaceted features, from voice and audio calls, to text messaging and encrypted file sharing, with 76% of its 1.3 billion monthly users returning daily.
Mean while, Snapchat has been spurring popularity with its Stories feature, using “Streaks” which reward daily private messaging Snaps with emoji badges.
This has now earned the app to a comfortable 250 million users.
WhatsApp and the Zuckerberg
Acquired by Facebook back in 2014, WhatsApp has seen a steady rise in numbers, putting the messaging platform at a $19 billion price point.
Conversely, Snapchat's recent earnings report was less than stellar, marking weaker growth than expected. It's speculated some of this has come as Facebook continues to copy Snapchat's most popular features.
Either way, the strategy's working for Facebook. Expect more monetisation from WhatsApp in the coming year, including vertical video ads similar to Instagram.
