World Cup smashes social records

While Germany might have won the World Cup in definitive fashion, on the other side of the pitch Facebook and Twitter both kicked a tonne of goals.

Thumbs Up

This week's World Cup final saw both platforms smash through previous usage records.

Halfway through the month-long tournament, the World Cup was already the most discussed event on Facebook with one billion interactions (Likes, comments and posts).

This week's final saw 88 million Facebook users generate over 280 million interactions, comfortably passing the previous record set during the 2013 Superbowl. That game saw 245 million interactions.

The US was the most active country during the final (10.5 million users), closely followed by Brazil (10m users) and Argentina (7m users).

#Goal

Twitter was no slouch when it came to record smashing.

The tweets-per-minute was broken when 618,725 tweets were sent in the 60 seconds following Germany's World Cup victory.

A few days earlier the German team set another social record: their 7-1 thumping of Brazil became the most popular single sporting event on Twitter, generating over 35.6 million tweets.
