Apple has thrown its hat into original programming, in an effort to join the ranks of top content creators.
Apple wants to be new HBO
Apple has already dabbled in original content, with programing such as ‘Planet of the Apps’ and ‘Carpool Karaoke,’ both launched via Apple Music.
The Wall Street Journal has reported the $1 billion budget to begin next year with consistent programing to be inline with the spending of HBO, who spent double that in 2017.
Apple is speculated to be adding 10 more programs to its lineup in 2018, and hopes to provide the same production quality as other subscription juggernauts like HBO and Netflix.
Talent doesn’t fall too far from the tree
Sony entertainment executives Jamie Erlicht and Zack Amburg have been tapped to oversee the launch of programming. The fledgling original content wing at Apple will be separate from the videos currently streamed through Apple Music.
To put the money in perspective, Amazon Prime Video plans to spend $4.5 billion through 2017, while Netflix is positioned to shell out $6 billion.
However, both ‘Planet of the Apps’ and ‘Carpool Karaoke’ received unfavourable reviews in their initial unveil, which may only bolster Apple to double down and take a more serious approach to programming.
