According to BuzzFeed News, Twitter CFO and COO Anthony Noto has revealed that Twitter is moving towards continuous live streaming, similar to a traditional broadcast network.
Twitter currently broadcasts a large roster of live shows, for clients including Bloomberg and the NFL. In fact, Twitter chalked up 800+ hours of live broadcasts in the first three months of 2017.
Cord cutters
Live video has been an increasingly lucrative tool for Twitter. Its Oscars coverage attracted 6.5 million unique viewers, while its Election Day package netted 8.6 million unique viewers.
The platform has allowed Twitter to offer 15 second and 30 second unskippable ad formats, the type advertisers typically pay networks top dollar for.
However the big players smell blood in the water. Amazon recently pinched the NFL broadcast rights from Twitter, and Facebook is making massive inroads into the living room.
All of which might be good news for couch potatoes, not so good news for network execs.
