Christchurch thinks Big for Aussie tourists

The Mayor of Christchurch Bob Parker is the face of an online campaign dedicated to bringing Australian tourists back to the city.

Christchurch Reimagined, a campaign developed by Iris Sydney for Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism, features a website which promotes interaction from locals and tourists.

Parker and his assistant Keith Ingleburn star in 'Bob Thinks Big', a series of three YouTube episodes in an attempt to borrow Australia's Big landmarks to increase tourism after the 2011 earthquakes.

Christchurch Reimagined

The Christchurch Reimagined website displays what’s happening in the city through its ‘Discovery Stream’.

The stream allows locals and tourists what they are doing in Christchurch through images uploaded to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Users can upload directly to the stream through Facebook, or use hashtags such as #christchurch or #chch, to have the stream automatically find the images.

Some of the images already uploaded feature Christchurch beaches and landmarks, such as Mount Hutt.

Big plans

Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism are also managing Facebook and Twitter accounts to reach potential tourists.

The Reimagined website encourages users to leave a message for Bob on the Facebook page, and the Discovery Stream page lists 10 trending hashtags.

Jetstar was also quick to snap up advertising on the website, with banners displaying one-way prices from Melbourne and Sydney in full view.

Time to talk

With almost 5,500 Facebook fans and an engagement rate of 5.12 per cent and a solid campaign underway, the platform is already increasing talk about the city on social media, even if Bob can't get the Big Pineapple to Christchurch.
