Facebook launches News Subscriptions

Facebook has finally launched its long-planned subscription service for 10 media outlets partnered with the popular social network.

Big news comes to Pages

The Washington Post, The Telegraph, CNN, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Economist, and Business Insider are just a few of the big names now offering subscription services through Facebook.

The service is based on a paywall system that engages after a user has viewed 10 free articles in a month, with Facebook forgoing any percentage. All payments will go directly to the news agencies.

US and Europe will be testing the new metered paywall subscription service, currently only available to Android users.

The advent of Instant Articles

Media organisations looking to utilise the new Facebook subscription service will need to adhere to the social network’s Instant Articles format, ensuring articles load faster on mobile devices.

The process to offer online news subscriptions has been underway for months now in order to provide up-to-date news content in the method users consume most, on mobile devices.

At present there are only 10 news agencies testing the new delivery system but more are likely to follow as subscriptions gain momentum.

Users who already subscribe to any of the testing news agencies will be able to login in through Instant Articles at no extra cost.
