Facebook Paper bites the dust

Proving that not everything it touches turns to gold, Facebook is shutting down its news app Paper.

Launched back in 2014, Paper garnered critical acclaim, however it wasn't enough to get users excited.

By the end of 2014 Paper had dropped out of the 1500 most popular apps list, and kept plunging.

The app hadn't been updated since May 2015, and was never released on Android.

"Our goal with Paper was to explore new immersive, interactive design elements for reading and interacting with content on Facebook, and we learned how important these elements are in giving people an engaging experience," Facebook explained when announcing Paper's demise.

However it's not all bad news for Facebook – as it aggressively expands into the breaking news space. Some of Paper's features have migrated to other Facebook apps, including Instant Articles.

And if good design won't work, maybe cash will.

Facebook is reportedly paying publishers such at the New York Times and The Huffington Post to use its Live video streaming service for breaking news.
