IGTV Carousel a Graveyard for Old Videos?

Instagram's IGTV is struggling to find a foothold with users, as the long-form standalone app expansion proves difficult for 'Grammers to stumble across.

Little orange button

Since launching in June, IGTV has yet to find its groove, and Instagram is hoping a new carousel in the main feed could be the answer.

At the moment, it’s a little tricky to navigate to IGTV. Found behind a small static orange button on the main app’s homescreen, users must download the extension. Suffice to say, IGTV is easy to miss.

Rest assured, a spokesperson for Instagram has explained “We’re always testing new and different ways to surface interesting content for people on Instagram.”

The new carousel

The IGTV carousel will appear below the Stories tray with a preview tile of videos with titles overlaid, such as content and artist info.

The new look is quite reminiscent of Recent Stories from Snapchat’s Discover section (suprise, surprise). What is surprising is Facebook’s wavering effort to capitalise on the new wave of verticial format recording wile Instagram excels.

Instagram isn't finding the same hurdle as its parent company but still needs to bring viewers to IGTV's longer format programing if the new feature is meant to stick around. In the mean time, keep an eye on that carousel.

Have you checked out IGTV yet? Do you think the addition of a better carousel is a solid move? Let us know what you think in our comments below.
