Hangouts Meet is getting an upgrade that’ll make it capable of streaming meetings to up to 100,000 enterprise-approved viewers.
Schedule, Meet, Stream
G Suite users from enterprises who pay for their Google products are going to receive improved support for streamed meetings.
For users, the new streaming capabilities are expected to be as simple as a switchable setting for a meeting’s entry in Google Calendar.
The launch announcement includes reference to upcoming support for Hangouts Meet hardware, but doesn’t give a lot of detail on that front.
In-domain stream
The new Hangouts Meet features aren’t meant to rival YouTube or its live streaming capabilities. In fact, it probably leverages the same underlying services. Instead, Hangouts Meet is purpose specific, being exclusively for ‘in-domain’ streaming.
It will allow a massive number of folks from the same enterprise to see announcements or discussions of interest. As examples of its usefulness, Google mentions ‘all-hands’ meetings and ‘onboarding’ exercises.
Turn on the tuning in
The new settings should show up in the G Suite Admins console now or soon, via Apps > G Suite > Google Hangouts > Meet settings.
End users should now be able to make proper use of the new capabilities.
As G Suite grows into a densely interlinked eco-system, is it becoming more attractive or does it inspire a desire for alternatives outside of the mainstream?
