Number Crunch: Vine 2015

While Facebook has finally taken to video with aplomb, Vine's been doing it longer, and shorter, than most.

Here's the latest stats from the six-second looping video platform.

Vineyard

Vine was launched back in June 2012 by Dom Hofmann, Rus Yusupov and Colin Kroll. It allowed users to create and share looping videos up to six seconds long, called Vines.

Five months later Twitter snapped up the start-up for a cool US$30 million.

A few months later Vine was the most popular video sharing app, and the most downloaded free app on the iOS App Store.

Less is more

Today Vine has 40 million users, while 100 million users view Vines every month.

Around 12 million Vines are uploaded via Twitter every day, while over 1 billion Vines are played daily.

Female friendly

In Australia 70% of Vine users are female, compared to a more even gender split in the US and UK.

Young guns

Vine is popular with the kids. Over 30% of US teens use Vine, and the most popular time to post is when school's out on the weekend.

Last year there was also an Xbox One version was released, allowing Xbox Live members to view Vines in-between gaming.

Brand space

But Vine isn't just popular with teens, brands are getting on board.

Some of the most active brands on Vine include Urban Outfitters, Puma, GE, Orea and Ford.

If you use Vines, let us know in the comments.
