Snapchat is taking another step towards Augmented Reality (AR) with World Lenses, and the result is everything you would hope it to be.
Augmenting fun to your surroundings
The idea of AR is nothing new and we’ve seen it used to a great extent, from popular Pokemon franchises to Snapchat’s real-time face swapping.
The new World Lenses feature allows for the placement and interaction with 3D graphics, mapped to a sophisticated gridwork overlaid onto your surroundings.
A big difference to similar AR of the past is the intelligent tracking of these 3D additions, without the use of awkward markers or simply painting over the screen.
Virtually dynamic and all the craze
With a range of animations and objects added to your phone in real-time, Snapchat users will be pleased with the seamless interface. But is it for everyone?
Early adopters have already established that users are hungry for personalisation that goes beyond digital stickers.
And though brightly coloured rainbows seem to be the benchmark, more subtle animations may be the test of this new medium’s flexibility. Snapchat will also feel increasing heat in the AR space, with the recent release of Facebook's Camera Lens platform.
Could customisable corporate logos be on the horizon? Do you think there could be potential for social advertising with World Lenses? Let us know the Comments.
