Twitter goes 360 on Apple TV

An update to Twitter’s Apple TV app sees it become the first channel to bring 360 video to the medium.

Twitter’s Apple TV users can use their Siri remote to swivel and tilt their way to explore 360 videos on their lounge room screens.

It remains to be seen whether users are happy to adapt to this new way of exploring 360 video, or if the tap-and-swipe of mobile devices has spoiled them early on.

Global Map

The same Twitter app update also brings their Global Map feature to Apple TV. This one lets people browse Periscope video feeds—both live and replays—based on the location of the stream.

Surprise victor

If you’d put money on Twitter being first to get 360 video onto Apple TV, you’d probably have gotten great odds.

Innovative video strategies have been a focus of YouTube, Facebook and a few other teams who certainly don’t like to be beaten to the punch.

Twitter’s recent strategy has certainly emphasised their live video capabilities, and Periscope has been keeping pace with 360 developments. This minor victory on Apple TV is an important indicator that Twitter are still genuine competitors.
