Number Crunch: Foursquare Q2

Remember a few years ago when everyone was trying to be the Mayor of their local cafe? That was Foursquare, the location-based social network where users gained points (and bragging rights) by visiting local businesses.

A few years down the track and the public's appetite for being virtual Mayor has cooled somewhat, yet Foursquare is still alive and kicking. Today we check in for the latest facts and figures.

Early days

Foursquare was launched in March 2009. By April 2012 the network has 20 million registered users.

There are currently over 45 million Foursquare users.

While checking-in has now been moved to Foursquare's companion app Swarm, they were very popular while they lasted.

Over four years users left over 5 billion check-ins, and 40 million tips.

Location, location

There are now over 60 million businesses listed on Foursquare. The most searched categories are cafes, airports, and shopping malls.

The most popular location is the Harfield-Jackson Atlanta International airport.

Top of the pops

Foursquare users are nothing if not an eclectic bunch.

The five most popular brands on the platform are MTV, Starbucks, History Channel, Bravo and The Ellen Show.
