Facebook announced the news on the Facebook for Business blog.
"Our mission is to make the world more open and connected, and an important part of that is helping people connect with businesses.
"Today, we want to express our thanks to you and all of our advertising partners — 2 million strong and growing every day," wrote Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and Mark Zuckerberg, in a joint statement.
SMEs on the grow
Many of these advertisers are SMEs – a sector Facebook is actively courting.
In its blog post Facebook used examples of small businesses who have successfully used Facebook advertising, including a mother from North Carolina who created a fresh food delivery service, and a Brazilian man who turned his love of making chocolate into a national chain.
Helping hand
Over the past year Facebook has launched a range of new advertising tools, including Story Packs and Topic Data, aimed at businesses who may not have their own marketing department or agency.
As Facebook continues to expand, expect more overtures to SMEs.
