While Facebook and Instagram are spitting out new apps like nobody's business, Google is winding them back.
The latest two to feel the heat: Google Voice and Hangouts.
Two become one
Google is merging the two voice and video apps, or more specifically Voice is being integrated with Hangouts.
Over the coming weeks Google Voice users will now see a message asking them to migrate to Hangouts.
Once migration is complete Google says all voicemail and text messages previously on Voice will now appear on users' Hangouts via Android or desktop.
You're the voice
The move makes sense for Google, which along with Facebook dominates app usage.
However recent studies show users are increasingly spending their time on a few select apps.
By merging two that have similar functions, Google is following the old adage that less is sometimes more.
