Snapchat’s Discover may yet be cloned again, with search-giant Google now coming to the party.
Stamp: Google’s visual news
If the rumours are true, the new service will let publishers create stories as text, images and video on a series of cards, with users swiping from one to the next.
So far, the new service is being called ‘Stamp’. It is reported that the ‘St’ in Stamp is meant to connote Stories.
Content with content
News seems to have gotten out early when the Wall Street Journal heard about Google’s negotiations with a number of news publishers.
CNN, The Washington Post, and Time Inc are reportedly among those whose content Google has approached hoping to distribute via the new service.
Tech and guess
If the St is for Stories, then what is the ‘amp’? It seems that stands for Accelerated Mobile Page—that’s a Google project aimed at making the web load faster, for pages and ads alike.
So, perhaps Stamp is simply a suggested format to make reports compatible with Google search and feed. If so, it seems likely that all media makers will be politely encouraged to use it.
With an abundance of Snapchat copycatting going on, do you reckon Google has a chance at doing Stories better?
