Number Crunch: Yelp

While it's long been a favourite of US and European users, over the past three years Yelp has steadily been building a solid fanbase in Australia and New Zealand.

A great space for retailers and an array of B2C businesses, here's a deeper look into the mobile review platform.

Yelpers

Yelp was founded in 2004 by former PayPal employees Jeremy Stoppelman and Russel Simmons.

The San Francisco-based platform now boasts 139 monthly unique visitors in more than 20 countries.

Reviewers reach

These users are an active bunch, and have to date created over 67 million reviews.

Over a third of Yelp reviews are posted from a mobile device, while 59% of all Yelp searches come from mobile.

Business-friendly

There are now over 86,000 business accounts on Yelp, and at any given moment there are 80,000 deals active on the platform.

Over an average day 200,000 calls are placed to businesses via the Yelp app, while users make 10,000 food orders every week.

The most popular review category is shopping, which attracts 23% of all Yelp traffic.

Demographic break down

The average Yelper is aged between 35 – 54, while 60% have a college education or higher.

They tend to be fairly well-heeled too: over a third of Yelp users earn of US$100,000.
