Twitter launches Meerkat rival Periscope

Live-streaming video app Meerkat might have been the darling of this year's SXSW, but Twitter now has responded its own rival service – Periscope.

Periscope is an iOS app that had quietly been in beta over the past year – until Twitter recently acquired the app for a reported US$100 million.

Launched just last week, Periscope allows users view and live-stream video from their smartphone via Twitter. 

Videos can be viewed on a mobile device, laptop, desktop or through the Periscope website.

New vision

So far, users have taken to Periscope to document everything from their weekend breakfast to breaking news, such as the recent explosion and fire in New York's East Village.

How Periscope differs from Meerkat remains to be seen. However the early indicators are that live video-streaming might be about to become a very big deal.
