DIGITAL MARKETING NEWS

The year on Twitter

Twitter has just lifted the lid on the top tweets of 2013, revealing the world's 232 million tweeters liked conversing about a diverse range of subjects including celebrity deaths, politics and reality TV.

RIP

Tweeters can't be accused of being an unsympathetic bunch. After Glee star Cory Monteith passed away in July the subsequent message and photo from colleague Lea Michele was retweeted over 408,000 times in over 130 countries – making it the most popular tweet of 2013.

A close second came news of actor Paul Walker's death, which was retweeted over 400,000 times.

News of Nelson Mandela's death accounted for 7.2 million tweets, or 95,000 tweets per minute during its peak.

#Australia

While Australia's 2 million tweeters were concerned with the federal election, natural disasters and sports scandals, it was the naming of Dami Im as the winner of X Factor 2013 that generated the most number of tweets.

Twitter also revealed that Aussies were big fans of tweeting in real-time to TV programs including Big Brother, My Kitchen Rules, The Voice and The Block.

Sports was also high on the radar with #Origin being the most popular Australian sporting term.

New Kids on the Block

2013 also saw Twitter's cache of high-profile users expand.

Notables that joined the party this year include former US presidents Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush, Kobe Bryant and Roger Federer.
