Twitter has released an update that promotes real time event discovery.
No time like the present
The update, which for now only applies to Android devices, works by adding addition content to the timeline.
Previously, the timeline was populated by the most recent tweets. Now when there’s no new content, Twitter shows trending topics, recommended posts from users not currently followed, and suggestions about who to follow.
In the US, Twitter is also providing content around breaking events such as news, TV shows and sports.
On trend
The update comes as Facebook aggressively moves to establish a foothold in the trending topics arena.
Recent Facebook features such as Trending Topics potentially threaten Twitter’s stranglehold on breaking events – and the advertising dollars that such a position commands.
Photo finish
In addition to the trending update, Twitter also released a new tool that makes it easier to edit and share photos.
And hopefully keep users away from rivals like Facebook-owned Instagram.
