YouTube is expanding its channels in a bid to feature more international content and capitalise on the growing viewer shift from broadcast to streaming services.
Channeling talent
Over the past year YouTube's website and functionality has been refreshed to emphasise channels, in a move towards more curated, quality content.
As part of this push YouTube has partnered with high-profile content creators such as Jay-Z and now has over 100 channels, with some receiving over one million weekly viewers.
Now the Google-owned video service is eyeing British, German and French audiences by funding 60 channels that will produce content for these regions. Some of these new channels include Germany's Motorvision and the French comedy channel FFSK.
“From local cuisine, health and wellness and parenting to sports, music, comedy, animation and news, this new line-up of original channels will have something for everyone,” YouTube's Robert Kyncl reported.
Ads versus content
YouTube is hoping the move will attract new advertisers, who may be more prone to partnering with a high-qualty videos than clips of cats playing keyboards.
As of May 2012, YouTube has 11 milliion Australia users and 29% of large businesses have a presence on the website.
