Facebook’s News Feed may take a hit in popularity as Stories fast becomes users’ favourite way to share and consume new content.
Facing change
Amidst Facebook’s fourth-quarter earnings, Mark Zuckerberg announced big changes to News Feed as a result from the continued evolution of social media usage.
According to Zuckerberg, “Stories are on track to overtake posts in Feed as the most common way that people share across all social apps.”
The transitory nature of Facebook’s Stories, disappearing after 24 hours, is a large contributor as to why users find themselves drawn to keeping current and following the section, oppose to regular feeds.
Flexibility for Facebook
Mobile ads account for 89% of Facebook’s current ad revenue, with Stories becoming their most penetrating content delivery method.
The growth of Stories could very well impact how Facebook builds product, including Instagram and WhatsApp, and show a marked shift in trusted news.
As users continue to share through the Story features of multiple social apps, the medium will remain fertile ground for innovation and may be the new frontier of staying informed.
