Facebook launching ‘3D’ posts for News Feed

Facebook has announced the ability for Oculus users to create 3D objects in Facebook Spaces and Oculus Medium and share them with friends without the headset.

I made this

At the recent Oculus Connect 4 event, Facebook demoed the new 3D posts where users can interact, rotate, and grab created objects.

Zooming, pinching, and spinning the objects is all par for the course. Creations such as figurines can be posed while items like toy cars will allow for opening and closing of doors.

Oculus Medium and Facebook Spaces will both allow for a drawing feature that can be shared directly to News Feed, with plans to allow third-party VR app developers to create objects elsewhere.

Facebook Spaces gets new features

Soon Spaces users will be ableto share 360 Live videos from within virtual reality, in a bid to clone Snapchat’s popular AR masks. Facebook will allow avatars to comport different themed masks.

Spaces already unveiled other interactive objects such as playing cards, dice, and drawing tools. Virtual objects will eventually be able to be combined or bundled to be saved and opened later.

Facebook is trying to encourage new content by making user creations as accessible as possible. The plan is to let the Facebook community build objects rather than relying on big-name developers.

VR as a medium may be on the cusp of finding its stride – and if not its certainly a bit of fun in the meantime.
