Blogging platform Tumblr has unveiled a modest redesign that allows more ads across its web dashboard.
Sponsored posts
Last month Tumblr launched sponsored posts across its native apps, which allowed users to reblog, follow and share ads and the brands that produced them.
Since launch sponsored posts have been reblogged and liked some 10 million times, and now Tumblr has brought the same functionality to the desktop. The ads will appear with a dollar sign to denote they are paid placements, and users will receive a maximum of four sponsored posts a day.
Brands partnering with Tumblr include Ford Motor Company, Universal Pictures and AT&T.
User backlash
As part of the redesign Tumblr also repositioned its Reblog and Notes buttons.
According to Tech Crunch, the move sparked a backlash from Tumblr's largely teenage user base, who appeared to blame Tumblr's new owners Yahoo for the change.
Whether Yahoo is behind the update is unclear. What is becoming apparent is that users looking for an ad-free experience on any of the big platforms will find it increasingly challenging as the majors begin to monetise.
