SMK’s app of the week: Mint

There are some things a machine or program will never replace, but these are becoming fewer as mobile devices, and the apps that power them, get smarter.

Once of the cleverest we've found is Mint, the one stop shop for personal finance.

All in one place

The best thing about Mint is that it pulls all your financial accounts and activity into one place. Simpy add your bank accounts, loans, investments and credit cards and Mint will give you a clearer picture into your financial position.

The personal touch

Mint is also highly customisable, meaning you can rename transactions into easy to recognise terms. You can also separate purchases from the same store into different categories – for example grocers, clothes, office supplies etc.

Budget

Another handy feature is Mint's budget feature.

The app calculates your average spending in any given category and creates a budget based on your historical spending.

You can also compare your spending year-to-year or month-to-month. Want to know how much that second morning coffee is really costing you?

Mint also shows you how to save in the future by cutting back spending in cetain categories, and expenses are tracked and categorised in real time.

Stay alert

Never forget to pay a bill again with Mint's alert system. Over 20 types of alerts notify you of fees, remind you to pay bills, and warn you if you’re going over budget. Every week you’ll get a summary of your spending and saving.
