Number Crunch: Facebook in Australia

Yes, it's already February. Which means we're well overdue for our first Number Crunch of the year.

While recent upstarts like Snapchat might be nipping at its heels, Facebook remains the uncontested king of social on a global scale.

So it seems only fitting that we kick off 2014 by looking at Facebook through an Australian lens.

G'day Facebook

According to stats from Social Bakers, Australians are passionate about snackfoods on the social network.

Skittles is the most popular Facebook brand page, with close to 1 million fans.

Taking second and third places are two pages devoted to Pringles, followed by MacDonald's Australia and Domino's Pizza Australia.

Celebrity status

Comedy duo Hamish and Andy are the most popular celebrities on Facebook with over 1.6 million fans.

Eminem comes next (1.3m fans), followed by Adam Sandler (1.08m fans), Pink (1.06m fans) and Katy Perry (1.05m fans).

Places

Sydney Airport remains the most popular check-in location for Australian Facebook users, with over 700,000 check-ins.

Next in line comes the venerable MCG with 342,373 check-ins, and Brisbane Airport, Domestic Terminal a close third with 341,508 check-ins.

Halfway there

More than 12 million Australians are Facebook users, making it the most popular social network in the nation by a country mile.

For perspective, there are estimated to be 2 million Twitters users and 1 million Instagramers in Australia.

Engagement

Australians are also a fairly engaged lot when it comes to Facebook.

Over 9 million Aussies visit Facebook on the web, 7.2 million on mobile, every day.
