eBay has launched two new visual search tools allowing online shoppers to snap photos and discover matching products more efficiently.
Snap, find, and shop
The two new visual search tools, “Image Search” and “Find it on eBay,” utilise the latest achievements in visual computing and deep learning while incorporating neural networks.
Image Search enables consumers to take a pic of something they like or use a saved image to shop eBay. The site will return a listing of products close in match or visually similar.
Competing with similar tools available through Amazon, Google, Pinterest, and Wayfair, eBay can battle back with a robust catalogue of 1.1 billion items.
Cross-platform shopping
The second tool, Find it on eBay, allows shoppers to begin their search on any social platform or web browser. Users can then “share” a found image with eBay to produce relatable product listings.
Both tools open up a new frontier of online product searching with a great deal of untapped potential, however retailers aren’t sharing analytics as to how many searches are translating to sales.
Though a picture can now provide a myriad of listings, some shoppers looking for an exact brand item may not appreciate all the suggested similar items.
Currently available only to Android users, there will be some necessary refinement if the tools take off. Either way, window browsing got a whole lot easier.
