Facebook has beefed up its gift-giving offering with Facebook Card, a physical card that lets users give their friends gifts from retail outlets.
Gift horse?
Facebook Card was announced via a blog post late last week.
It works like this. Users select the gift they want to give, for example a voucher at Target, then pay for the gift and card.
The recipient will be electronically notified and the card mailed to their address, where it can be redeemed in-store.
Facebook Cards are reusable, meaning future gifts can be automatically uploaded onto the card.
Card up their sleeve
The gift card is an extension of Facebook Gifts, the social network's latest foray into the online retail space.
During Facebook's fourth quarter earnings report it was revealed that Gifts and promoted posts accounted for a small amount of the company's total revenue – less than US $5 million.
Facebook will be hoping its new gift card will see this figure increase in 2013. Retail rivals like Amazon will not.
