While it might be news to some, until this week teenagers weren't allow to publicly post on Facebook. Parents and marketers, hold onto your hats.
Teenage riot
Until now teenagers were restricted to sharing content with friends and friends of friends. Now users aged 13 to 17 can share posts with any Facebook users and gain followers.
“Teens are among the savviest people using social media, and whether it comes to civic engagement, activism, or their thoughts on a new movie, they want to be heard.
“So, starting today, people aged 13 through 17 will also have the choice to post publicly on Facebook,” the company wrote in a blog post.
More noise
The change signifies Facebook is keen to keep its teenage user base happy and ideally stop leaving Facebook for new platforms like SnapChat and Tumblr.
If Facebook can stymie the tide by giving teens more room to play it will help secure its next generation customers. It also means more customers for marketers that advertise on Facebook.
