Music-streaming service Pandora is once more available in Australia and New Zealand, returning after a seven year absence.
Streaming sounds
Pandora lets users select artists and genres of music they like, then matches similar tracks to offer a streaming radio experience. Music can be accessed via the web or from the Pandora app for iOS or Android.
The basic version of Pandora is free, while the Pandora One paid model is ad-free and features higher-quality audio.
As part of the Australian launch Pandora is partnering with Holden for its in-car infortainment system.
Mobile music
Pandora was initially available in Australia in 2005, but was blocked after 18 months due to licensing issues.
Today the Australian music-streaming sector is more crowded, with the likes of Spotify and Telstra's MOG competing with local radio stations for consumer's ears and wallets.
Why has Pandora decided to return? Australia's massive smartphone ownership.
Smartphones mean smart move
According to Tech Crunch, Pandora’s Amanda Livingood said Australia is one of the world's most mobile-centric societies.
“We know Australians and New Zealanders love both local and international music and we also know that they’re huge users of mobile devices and social media,” explained Livingood.
