It’s been a busy month for monetisation. First Snapchat made the move to advertising, now SoundCloud is jumping on the brand bandwagon.
Sounding out
The music-sharing platform recently announced On SoundCloud, a service that allows content creators to run ads alongside their music tracks, and keep a percentage of the profits.
“As artists ourselves, Eric and I started SoundCloud with a simple vision.
“We wanted to develop tools for creators, help them reach fans all over the world, and shape a way we could pay the creators who fuel the growth of SoundCloud,” wrote SoundCloud founder and CEO Alex Ljung.
Music to their eyes
The ads are currently available to a select group of creators in the US, with a global roll out expected later this year.
Brands including Red Bull and Jaguar have committed to run ads on the platform.
On SoundCloud marks a big step for SoundCloud, which attracts 175 million monthly listeners but has struggled to monetise.
However music junkies don't have to worry about their favourite mix tapes being overrun with advertorial – it's rumoured paid subscribers will be able to skip these ads.
