Poor old Google+. Now in its third year, Google's social network has had all the opportunities in life, but has never been able to fully capitalise on them.
Having said that, G+ has been responsible for a number of great innovations, including video group chat feature Hangouts.
Here are some stats that might give a hint into which direction G+ is heading.
Mixed bag
The most popular G+ accounts are perhaps the most eclectic of any social network.
In first place comes YouTube (9.9 million followers), while Lady Gaga comes in second place (8.9 million followers) with Larry Page in third (8.5 million followers).
The rest of the top ten include entries from Madonna, Snoop Dogg, Angry Birds and David Beckham.
Keep it in the family
It's no suprise to learn Google properties are the most popular brands on G+.
Android, Google Chrome and Google Play are the three most popular brands on the platform.
The next most popular category is cars, with three automotive makers (Ferrari, BMW and Mercedes) making it into the top ten.
Engagement
A typical user spends seven minutes a month on G+, while the average time spent on the site is 3.46 minutes.
Numbers game
Google+ has over 300 million active users, making it roughly as big as LinkedIn. A lot of them are males.
Back in 2011 over 71% of G+ users were males aged between 25 – 34.
The gender divide has balanced somewhat: now 60% of G+ users are male, 25% female and the rest classed as “other” or “unknown”.
Perhaps tellingly, only 20 million G+ users access the platform on mobile.
