Popular file sharing website Dropbox has teamed up with Facebook to allow users to share files directly from Dropbox into Facebook Groups.
In a post on its official blog, the company announced the latest feature, saying that it is being rolled out to all users from this week.
Files for everyone
Facebook Groups are increasingly being used in both personal and business settings, allowing users to manage their recreational sports team or a team project at work.
The social network also introduced Facebook Groups for Schools in April this year, allowing specific classes or teams to have their own, private group.
One of the primary benefits of sharing a file from Dropbox, for personal, school or business users, is that any changes to the file will be updated automatically.
For example, a spreadsheet displaying sales figures could be updated daily, and the post in the Group’s wall would always be current.
Tough competition
Incorporating Dropbox into Facebook Groups allows for an extra layer of competition against other real-time collaboration tools such as Google Apps and Microsoft's Office 365.
Whether Facebook Groups see an uptake in use following Dropbox’s inclusion remains to be seen.
Linking a personal social networking account and signing up to Dropbox sounds more intrusive than a simple email login to Google Apps or Office 365, however the ease of use may attract new users.
The feature is currently rolling out to Facebook Groups, and Dropbox’s help guide can be found here.
