For version 8.29, Skype has ditched on Highlights and a few other recently introduced tools. They'll make way for a new feature, Call Recording.
Bye bye Highlights
Highlights was akin to Instagram’s Stories. Stopping its Stories experiment, Skype signals its re-evaluation of what it means to be social.
Highlights was part of a socially-inspired redesign, seen by many to be a bad move. Criticism of the cluttered interface and overly-complex experience noted that the platform was straying beyond its core competence.
So, Microsoft says the reversion aims at ‘simplicity and familiarity’. Hopefully, they focus on what they do best, with fewer tabs and fewer faddish functions. Most people don’t want Skype to be Snapchat.
Hi call recording
The latest update also brings the much-requested ability to save a record of your Skype calls in the cloud. It’s the real deal, capturing all the audio, all cameras and any shared screens from chat sessions.
Call participants are told if a call will be recorded, giving them a chance to opt out of the recorded chat.
Interestingly, call recording has launched with the latest version of Skype and all platforms except Windows 10. Why they’d leave their own flagship OS until last is anybody’s guess.
Once the champion of non-Apple video chat, is Skype still all that?
