Manage your Privacy Policy in WordPress

WordPress has added ‘Privacy Policy pages’ into its base functionality.

New default

WordPress has long had a couple of default Page settings, being the ones that are core to the user experience of websites built with the popular content management system. Until now, those defaults have been the ‘Homepage’ and the ‘Posts page’.

Now, they’ve added ‘Privacy Policy page’ to that list. And it’s got its own easy-to-manage functions that could be a real timesaver.

Useful to users

While new Privacy Policy pages may be mainly motivated by the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, WordPress’ change will also be useful in other contexts.

Once a Privacy Policy page is set, it will be shown at all registration and login pages. In practice, that automates a lot of best-practice policy disclosures.

For total confidence, the folks who build and maintain WordPress recommend also putting a link to the Privacy Policy in a footer menu, where one exists.

Set the page

Site admins logged in to their WordPress dashboard can make relevant tweaks by going to ‘Settings > Privacy’. There, they can choose whether to set an existing page as their Privacy Policy page, or to whip up a new one.

Are policy disclosure obligations a technical headache or an opportunity for trust-building communications?
