Snapchat is bringing its popular Snap Map format to the web for anyone to view, effectively extending the reach of advertisers.
X marks the ad(venture)
The addition of a web-based map allows non-mobile users to view public stories via desktop by clicking on bubbles populating different locations to access publicly posted stories.
Advertisers have begun favouring the public stories format to showcase and advertise events in real-time, all in one easily accessible location.
Snap is hoping to spur media organisations into adopting the advertising platform to further drive engagement and provide news with embedded features.
Know the climate
Snap Map also shows a weather-like graduated heat map, so users can better ascertain the level of involvement in specific activities or events thanks to ‘embeds.’
‘Embeds’ help spread live content by easily accessible information regarding venues, etc. However, the web-version will not offer friend-spotting, making advertisements the main draw.
A centralised spot to see what’s going on around you is an efficient way for users to engage with local businesses as well as larger events. Advertisers will likely be the one’s to decide the map’s future.
