‘Instant Videos’ enters beta testing at Facebook

Facebook is currently testing a new feature that allows pre-loaded and cached videos to be accumulated when connected to Wi-Fi and viewed later without use of data.

Download now, enjoy later

Like Facebook’s Instant Articles, the new feature is designed to use less data and promote faster load times, with slow downloads being the greatest deterrent to users on the go.

Not only would publishers benefit by ensuring optimum viewability of their content, Facebook’s new Watch tab of original programing would also have greater appeal requiring no data consumption.

Currently being tested through select Android users, Instant Videos was screen captured thanks to social media manager Matt Navarra.

Less data and more viewing

Online video consumption is fast becoming the world’s favourite form of content consumption with a 53% increase in engagement regarding news outlets through Instagram, also owned by Facebook.

The beta run of Instant Videos on Android devices may indicate Facebook’s intention to play to non-iPhone users, which translates to cheaper or more cost-effective devices.

Catering to less expensive tech, coupled to wi-fi friendly pre-downloaded content, Facebook is sending a message that they want their network to be accessed by users of every price point.

Would you be inclined to pre-download video? Do you think these features mark a new form of video consumption? Give us your thoughts in the comments below.
