It turns out there might be too much of a good thing – at least when it comes to emoji.
In an effort to keep global eyeballs glued (and textings), Facebook has released Messenger Lite, a paired-back version of Messenger for Android.
On Message
Messenger Lite retains the core features of its parent app, including the ability to send and receive texts, photos, and links.
The app is under 10MB, and designed to work smoothly in areas with slower internet speeds.
Global reach
Messenger now has over 1 billion users around the globe. Many of these are in emerging markets: places Facebook needs a foothold in if it's to continue growing.
The move follows Facebook's recent launch of a stripped down flagship app for Android. That app has been downloaded 100 million times just ten months after launch.
Messenger Lite is rolling out in Kenya, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, and Venezuela. Other nations are expected to be added in the coming months.
