Video on Facebook has been big news for some time, but now Facebook Live (its live video streaming function) is becoming all the rage.
To emphasise the value of live streaming video, Facebook has just updated how it ranks this emerging content.
Live in the moment
Facebook announced the update in a blog post.
"Now that more and more people are watching Live videos, we are considering Live Videos as a new content type – different from normal videos – and learning how to rank them for people in News Feed.
"As a first step, we are making a small update to News Feed so that Facebook Live videos are more likely to appear higher in News Feed when those videos are actually live, compared to after they are no longer live."
Top marks
Facebook says users are spending 3X more time watching live, rather than pre-recorded videos. Hence the boost. So what does this mean for brands?
At the moment not a lot. Facebook Live is only available for verified Pages and public figures (including an epic feed from The Rock).
However expect a wider roll out shortly, and when it does brands should be ready to jump on the streaming bandwagon and soak up those views.
