Messenger has just opened up its books and no longer requires a Facebook account to sign up.
Facebook announced the news in a blog post.
"With this update, more people can enjoy all the features that are available on Messenger – including photos, videos, group chats, voice and video calling, stickers and more.
"All you need is a phone number," wrote Louis Boval, Software Engineer.
Mobile monolith
Now users in the US, Canada, Peru and Venezuela will be greeted with an option on the Messenger home page that reads "Not on Facebook?".
All that's required is a name, phone number and photo. Messenger will then build a profile based on your phone contacts.
Facebook says signing up this way gives users access to all the regular Messenger features including photos, video, group chats, voice and video calling.
Open slather
This year has seen a loosing of the reigns when it comes to sign-in credentials. Periscope no longer requires a Twitter account to login, now Facebook has followed suit.
With over 700 million users, Messenger is already something of a monolith. By opening the floodgates a little bit further, it might about to get much bigger.
